Sri Lanka is a rewarding place to visit due to many reasons; number one would probably be the fact that it’s surrounded by gorgeous beaches. Here’s a brief overview of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for you to discover which beach is most suited for you. Most of Sri Lanka’s string of fine beaches are within easy reach of the capital, Colombo.


One of the finest stretches of beach on the west coast, running south from the magnificent Bentota lagoon. Bentota is also one of the island’s best water sports destinations. The calm waters of the lagoon are perfect for kayaking and jet-skiing, while boat trips up the river to explore the mangroves and tangled waterways are easy to arrange.


Popular with merry crowds, Hikkaduwa on the west coast is famous for its Coral Gardens. This beach town continues to draw visitors with its lively nightlife and beach fests with DJs spining out tunes all night long out on the beach. Its clear waters and lively waves make it ideal for swimming.


Situated on Sri Lanka’s south coast about 5km from the charming colonial town of Galle, the popular beach of Unawatuna has it all: magnificent beach backed by a striking rocky outcrop, good swimming with a sheltered bay resulting in calm waters year-round, good nightlife and fun activities. Its closeness to Colombo makes it a popular weekend getaway for locals.


On the south coast, the fine sands of Mirissa beach are backed by palm trees. It is a beautiful beach, with a relaxed and laidback atmosphere. Along the beach are plenty of small restaurants and cafes, serving delicious and fresh seafood. The beach is ideal for lay down and just relax and watch the beach life. If one wants do some action, the water is very clear which makes it perfect to go snorkeling around the small reefs and rocks.


Just an hour’s drive from Colombo, the beach town of Negombo on the west coast is ideally located for those in need of a quick break on golden sands before flying home. You’ll find plenty of activities to keep you entertained at this lively beach town, from wetland boat trips to kitesurfing, with a few attractions left over from the colonial era including St. Mary’s Church, and the remnants of the old Dutch fort.


Weligama, translated as sandy village, is a great place to learn to surf. It is a two kilometer stretch of shallow sandy beach and one of the best places in south Sri Lanka to discover a connection with the ocean and surf from early morning till sunrise. It usually quiet until 8am which makes it a good time to practice on uncontended waves.

Arugam Bay

Towards the southern end of the east coast, Arugam Bay is a popular destination. Arugam Bay has unique charms of its unspoilt, palm-fringed beach. Its fine vibe and charm provide great appeal. Arugam Bay is widely popular among surfers for having some of the best waves in Sri Lanka. The beach continuously attract plenty of surfers.
